Item Utilisation of Linguistic Landscape for Acquiring English as a Foreign Language(East African Journal of Arts and Social Sciences, 2025-04-01) Moses Fegher1*, Prof. Sheila Pamela Wandera-Simwa, PhD1 & Prof. Felicia Arudo Yieke1This paper focuses on the role of the linguistic landscape in facilitating the acquisition of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in Kenya’s multilingual society. It explores how different aspects of the linguistic landscape, including signs, symbols, public notices, and interactions within educational settings, support learners in engaging with and acquiring English. Linguistic Landscape Theory (LLT), which emphasises the visibility of languages in public spaces as a key factor in language learning, is employed. The paper employs a descriptive design and uses qualitative and quantitative data. The data presented is generated at three language institutes in Nairobi: the Consolata Language Centre (CLC), the Language School of Kenya (LSK), and the Kenyan Institute of Foreign Languages and Professional Studies (KIFLAPS). A purposive sampling approach was adopted to select 30 learners and 2 instructors from each institute. Data were collected through questionnaires for learners, in-depth interviews with instructors, and non-participant observation of the linguistic landscapes within the institutes. The findings reveal that the linguistic landscapes in the selected institutes were rich in visual displays, including electronic devices, printed materials, and other visual aids. These elements were strategically incorporated to support EFL acquisition by creating an engaging and visually stimulating environment. The importance of integrating real-life language usage within learning approaches and how the surrounding language environment impacts learners' language development are highlighted. It concludes that the linguistic landscape is vital in accelerating learning, enhancing information transfer, and fostering familiarity with English. It also contributes significantly to developing key language skills such as reading, speaking, and critical thinking. The paper proposes that incorporating a thoughtful linguistic landscape can create a supportive, immersive learning environment, which enhances EFL acquisition outcomes in diverse educational settings.Item University Students’ Ease of Accessing Information on Social Networking Sites Used in Communicating Drugs and Substance Abuse: An Assessment of Laikipia University in Kenya(International Journal of Media, Journalism and Mass Communications (IJMJMC), 2024-08-20) Juliet Atieno Oduor*, Felicia Yieke, Florence MwithiEmpirical data indicate that access to reliable information can be effective in the fight against Drugs and Substance Abuse (DSA) among young populations such as undergraduate students. This can alleviate cases of insufficient communication that have been linked to the high prevalence of DSA, especially in different public universities in Kenya. Correspondingly, communication experts assert that using audience-preferred platforms is crucial for achieving desired outcomes, as it enhances access. While most universities use Social Networking Sites (SNSs) to communicate with students who prefer these platforms, research on the accessibility of information, particularly regarding DSA, is limited. Thus, this study while focusing on Laikipia University as a representative of other public universities in the country, used the tenets of the Uses and Gratifications Theory and an institution-based cross-sectional convergent mixed methods design to examine the university students' ease of accessing information posted on the various SNSs. The results showed that while students can access information through free campus Wi-Fi, many are unaware of how to search for DSA-related topics. Additionally, the lack of hyperlinks on content posted on the SNSs limits access to multiple sites. The administration's inconsistent posting and feedback further hinder students’ access to the information. Onyuma1 & Florence A. Opondo1This study investigated the influence of foreign investor participation reforms (FIPRs) on securities market performance in Kenya. It employed an exploratory research design, collecting primary data from firms participating in the securities market and 238 respondents who actively participated in the Kenyan securities market. Data was analyzed using SPSS AMOS, employing principal component analysis and confirmatory factor analysis to evaluate the associations between latent variables. Structural equation modelling was undertaken to evaluate any inherent relationship between the study variables. The findings revealed a significant positive influence between FIPR and several key indicators. An increase in FIPRs incentivized foreign investors to purchase more listed securities. As a result, foreign investors are shifting towards online trading due to reforms, which reduce the need for physical travel. The inherent taxation rate adjustment within the reforms has successfully drawn in more foreign investors into the local market. Generally, the results reveal a significant relationship between foreign investor participation reforms and securities market performance in Kenya, demonstrating the influence of these reforms in shaping domestic securities market outcomes. Given that investors constitute sixty-five percent of trading at the Nairobi Securities Exchange, attempts to further increase market activity must consider a reform agenda aimed at attracting foreign investors into the market.Item Does the Legal Framework Moderate the Relationship between Resource Allocation Reforms and Financial Performance of County Governments? Evidence from Kenya(East African Journal of Business and Economics,, 2025-05-05) Titus Kiplangat Kemboi1*, Samuel O. Onyuma1 & BenJack O. Ochieng1This study examined the effect of resource allocation reforms on the performance of county governments and how the legal framework moderates this relationship. The study was grounded on resource allocation theory, informed by positivist research philosophy and utilized a correlational research design. The target population consisted of the 47 county governments in Kenya, which were clustered into seven regional blocs. Within each regional bloc, a county with the lowest budget absorption rate, as per the Controller of Budget's 2023 report, was selected. The top and middle-level management employees in the Department of Finance and Economic Planning were selected resulting in 229 target respondents upon which a sample size of 144 was determined using Krejcie and Morgan formulae. Data was analyzed using the SPSS Analysis of Moment Structure, employing factor analysis and structural equation modelling. Results of the study revealed that resource allocation reforms had a statistically significant effect on County financial performance, (β=0.499, t=5.578, p< 0.05). However, the legal framework in place had an insignificant moderating effect on the relationship between resource allocation reforms and County financial performance (β=0.019, t=0.225, p> 0.05). The paper concludes that issues relating to reforms targeting resource allocation are important in improving the financial performance of county governments and recommends effective implementation of resource allocation reforms to ensure enhanced performance of county governments in Kenya. Item The Efficacy of Individual e Peer Mentorship Services on Mental Health among University Students Engaging in Transactional Sex in Laikipia University(Laikipia University, 2024-12-27) Enos Barasa MukadiFood insecurity is associated with increased sexual risk through transactional sex and lack of ability to negotiate safer sex. Food insecurity is associated with HIV acquisition risks through behavioural (e.g., Transactional sex) and mental health (e.g., alcohol use, depression) pathways. Food insecurity has also been associated with increased sexual risk practices among HIV-positive youth in sub-Saharan Africa (Aberman et al., 2014). Most university students in low or middle-income countries face many financial problems, leading them to Transactional Sex (TS) for survival, which creates challenges in their academic progress and mental health. This behavioural trend has been a significant cry by parents and other stakeholders in towns and suburbs with university campuses around them. The purpose of this study was to determine individual e-peer mentorship services on the mental health among university students engaging in transactional sex in Laikipia University. The research team recruited and trained 20 peer mentors to empower 20 university students (18-24yrs) who engage in transactional sex to improve mental health literacy and for sustainable psycho-social status. Peer relations, counselling, communication, and social skills were imparted under the guidance of research experts. The peer mentor trainees underwent the e-Peer Mentorship Model training. The research team developed indicators that were used to rate the targeted outputs and outcomes from time to time. To track the progress in behavioural change, the research undertook a baseline survey of the mental issues affecting female students engaging in TS. The study undertook mid-term and end-of-project evaluations to establish differences in mental health issues affecting mentees over the project lifespan. The programme is expected to benefit students by providing them with counselling skills, communication skills, entrepreneurship skills, social skills, and Information Communication Technology skills. The model may be used by universities and other tertiary institutions in handling issues of transactional sex.Item The Educational Needs of Displaced High School Students: The Case of Olposimoru Forest Evictees in Narok County, Kenya(Journal of Social Sciences, Education and Humanities, 2024-07-21) Gilberd LangatClimate change is a worldwide debate affecting humanity. The Kenyan government is evicting people who have encroached on forests, thereby leading to internal displacement. The condition of displacement affects governments’ ability and willingness to provide basic protection and services such as education. The study sought to investigate the schooling experiences of displaced high school students, with a case of the Olposimoru forest evictees. Based on a current study carried out, this paper discusses the findings on the educational needs of displaced high school students. The target group for this study was displaced high school day-scholar students. Hermeneutics phenomenology theory guided this research. The research was carried out in Olposimoru District of Narok County. Displaced students were the key participants in this research, while class teachers and head teachers were the key informants. The snowballing technique was used to select the students for study, while class teachers were sampled using a simple random sampling technique. The study was conducted using a descriptive case of Olposimoru forest evictees. Five schools were selected through purposive sampling. The researcher used questionnaires and oral interviews to collect data. The raw data from the students’ responses was organized, coded, and keyed on the SPSS program. The study found that displaced students have varied educational needs in addition to their normal adolescent growth and development challenges. They mostly need psychological motivation and support. They also need money to pay school fees. Students also have other material and sociological needs, such as teaching and learning materials, housing, and a sense of family.
